Start the weekend at VERSO, or shall we say City of Lost – the entire club will be transformed into a steampunk playland. Kicking off on Friday, October 28th, boo-gie down to the beats of Suara, a Barcelona-based dance music label and non-profit cat rescue. We won’t judge if you decide to dress up as a black cat.

Saturday, bring out your goriest gowns and sharpest fangs because VERSO will be offering a $1,000 grand prize costume contest. Howl all night long to the hip-hop sounds of Astronomar and Bot along with Bay area local, Grensta. Buy tickets today…before it’s too late.

freakshow
Get freaky with a Freak Show! Made with Hibiscus infused Absolut Elyx, Pimm’s, Madeira, Grapefruit and Bitter Lemon soda, this sweet-and-sour cocktail is a guaranteed freaking good time.

Growing up you’d give the neighbors a scare with a game of ding-dong ditch. The adult version is much better. Order a Ring-a-Ding with Coriander Singhani, Smith & Cross Rum, Cantaloupe Lemongrass Shrub and Egg Whites…this is one drink you won’t want to run away from.

The Ultimate Spring Guide to Squaw Valley

Monday, April 18, 2016 9:21:42 PM

From the people who know best, a selection of Squaw and North Tahoe locals give us insight on the best things to do, see, go, eat, events, etc..this Spring. So much to do, plus with the addition of the mountain staying open in May, there are even more fun activities on the list.

Squaw Valley Resorts Hot Tub at High Camp, is an iconic get together of all walks of life. Get to know locals, visitors, young, old, ski pros and newbies. Plus, the views are some of the best in Tahoe at 8200 elevation and the beer is cold. Swim all day in the pool and relax in the hot tub.Spring is a multi-sport season!
One of the best ways to experience the warmth and sunshine of Lake Tahoe is by paddle board, kayak, or boat. If you’re into experiencing the water in a different way, there’s always Fly Fishing! We recommend Matt Heron Fly Fishing in Squaw Valley.
Rock climbing season has begun, and you have the chance to rope-up! We recommend Donner Summit or Big Chief.Hiking is a must for anyone, whether you need to find your zen on a solo adventure or you want to experience with a group. During the spring months, you’ll get to see some of the most gorgeous waterfalls from all of that snow runoff. Some of PlumpJack Squaw Valley Inn’s staff recommend Shirley Canyon or the many trails around Emerald Bay. Check out the massive list of hiking trails in Squaw Valley here.
1510-Plumpjack SVI-345Dining and Drinking Everyone agrees there is a lot of great dining and drinking to go around in North Lake Tahoe, and especially Squaw Valley. We are biased and think that PlumpJack Cafe has the best weekday happy hour and a pretty darn good bar menu, and then the dining room, which is the spot for a more elevated culinary experience. We are also big fans of many of our fellow restaurants and bars. In Squaw Valley, we love Mamasake for their Beer and a Handroll special and their excellent sushi. We also love grabbing a glass of wine and some cheese at Uncorked. For a rowdy and fun night, you can’t miss the Cantina where all the locals go for cheap PBRs and music.

PS – Don’t miss PlumpJack Cafe’s Pig Roast & Tequila Toast on June 12th. This years theme is Mexican, enjoy Mexican beers, tequila and inspired cocktails with slow roasted carnitas.
Notable Events In Squaw Valley

The Easiest Spring Styles

Monday, March 28, 2016 1:00:30 PM

Sometimes it feels like the seasons change over one weekend. We finally received some much needed rain over the past few weeks and this past week finally feels like spring has arrived (hello sunshine!).

With a new season, means a new wardrobe.
Which means finding time to scope out new pieces to add to your closet. Personally, I often don’t have time to take time and go out shopping. So I prefer getting some easy pieces that I know will last me a long time, will go with my existing pieces in rotation and easy enough to throw on for work or weekend.

This season was hard to narrow down my favorites, but a few that stood out can be versatile for most California weather well through fall and easy to become staples within a solid spring/summer wardrobe

SIGN ME UP! (2)

  1. This shoe has recently become a Tory Burch favorite. The Lexington wedge is an easy style that you will live in almost year round – and is honestly comfortable. (Tory Burch)
  2. Sweater tank. I know what you’re thinking, a sweater for a warm weather season? But it’s a tank. And it’s a breathable woven. So it works  – really well. A great top to pair with cutoff denim shorts or tucked into some amazing joggers (as pictured).(360 Sweater)
  3. A perfect in season wash, and a relaxed fit are ideal for the coming months. This denim is your go-to-throw-on-with-any-top kind of pant that keeps it’s fit day to day. (Fidelity Denim).
  4. I’ll start by saying the picture does not do this one justice. This jumpsuit is hardly, a jumpsuit. On, it looks like a dress – flowy and ridiculously comfortable. So it’s absolutely perfect for bike rides and windy days. You’re welcome. (Tysa Designs)
  5. 5.   I’m happy that joggers are still on trend. (Okay, maybe I’m a little bias, since they typically are offered in shorter inseams and are ideal for my 5’3 self). Anyways, there are a great alternative to a denim since they’re a lighter pant and ultimately become your best friend when you bring on all your spring/summer vacations. (Velvet)

Happy Spring shopping!

24 hours of New Year’s Eve in SF

Tuesday, December 29, 2015 11:53:36 PM

Follow our blueprint for our ideal New Year’s Eve and you’ll be guaranteed that 2016 will welcome you with open arms and a warm hug.

Attire – more importantly, the dress. Choose from a comfortable, clubby ensemble from Amour Vert, a classic lace get-up from DVF that says I am serious about this holiday, or something fun and flashy that you can layer with a jacket when getting around on the city streets. All these dresses and styles available at PlumpJackSport.

Are you in the mood to party on New Year’s Eve?
Are you the popping bottles and noshing on caviar partier or are you the laying low-type that likes intimate conversations over some good bubbles and hearty fare. Ditch the grocery store party platter and whip up some delightful finger food, but first, the main character, the bubbles.

Go to PlumpJack Wine & Spirits and ask for Paul, or just take his word for it and buy his top picks.
1. Comtes De Champagne Taittinger, 2005: “100% Chardonnay, in my mind this is one of the greatest Champagnes around. It is probably the only champagne i would flat.
2. Pol Roger Brut Réserve Champagne: “This is an equal blend of the three main varietals. This champagne has a toasty and fruity balance to it.
3.Champagne Gratiot Gerad: “100% Pinot Meunier. This champagne has a little more of a floral note to it and a nice creamy mousse.”

Diversify your libations and add a celebratory signature cocktail to liven up your soiree.
We enlisted our favorite bartenders at Forgery for a cocktail recipe, and guess what, they know what their doing, so take notice. If you don’t know what some of these items are, there is always Google.
And then there are snacks – very important if you want to continue the party til midnight.
We have lots of inspiration on our Pinterest board, we literally spent many hours searching, pinning and procrastinating, because that is what Pinterest is for, let’s be honest. When it’s time to usher your guests out of your place, because things are starting to get messy and the bubbles are all gone, get yourself to a club. We have two choices for you. For a smaller venue with great jams and lots of dancing, plus champagne and really great cocktails, and even a beer for those who just want to quench their thirst, get to MatrixFillmore. New Year’s Eve features DJ Amy Robbins, spinning the best Top 40 and House beats. Purchase tickers here
If you’re looking to go out and dance your face off to some serious DJs and want to splurge on ultra-exclusive table service, featuring batched craft cocktails, light fare, and more, you need to add Verso to your NYE agenda. Or you can just purchase a ticket to dance and drink, and it will still be the best New Year’s EVER! Purchase tickets here.

Aftermath of New Year’s can be bitter, but you know what makes it sweet? Brunch!
Get yourself to Balboa Cafe San Francisco, STAT, and order the following: a Balburrito (trust us), an order of Eggs Benedict, or Huevos Rancheros and then wash it down with the city’s best Bloody Mary. Okay, feel better now, we thought so. And, maybe you had a big night and are still up at 9am, in which case, you’re in luck, the Balboa opens bright and early and if you slept in until 1pm, you’re still doing great. And if you are unable to leave the confines of your living room/bedroom, Balboa delivers with partner Caviar. MENU

When it comes to getting away for New Year’s, Squaw Valley is the place to be! PlumpJack Squaw Valley Inn is a cozy, lodge-like resort located at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in North Lake Tahoe California. With amazing snowfall kicking off this season, you wont want to miss the chance to get up to the mountain with amazing conditions this season. Enjoy a great apres ski at the PlumpJack Bar (view menu), the perfect place to wind down from a day of skiing with friends! We are also offering a special Prix Fixe menu for New Years (view menu).

Gifts for Your: Best Friend

Friday, December 11, 2015 4:00:51 PM

As someone who loves buying gifts for people rather than myself, I especially enjoy getting gifts for my best friends. Having been scouring the internet for the past month, I’ve come across quite a few piece that I know they would love.

  1. This blanket literally feels like, if a cloud and a hug had a baby. Need I say more?
  2. Raw cut druzy stone earrings offer the right amount of sparkle and dimension. P.S. This collection is all handmade in the Bay Area.
  3. I’ll be sipping my CADE Sauvingon Blanc this season in this ultra chic stemless wineglass.
  4. The perfect pair of slippers to step into after work. And totally wearable to go out and get your latte on a Sunday morning.
  5. An ideal everday tote bag with a smooth finish and optional monogram detail.
  6. Dress up simple tea lights with these pretty tea light holders.

Redefining Your Winter Wardrobe

Monday, November 16, 2015 4:00:08 PM

This winter season here in Napa, we are yet again hoping for a season of true cold weather conditions and an abundance of rain. And while we’ll most likely at least get cooler temperatures, that’s a good enough reason for us to wear our winter coats and scarves. However, whether you’re here on the west or east coast, we all have become accustomed to reaching for the same neutral winter color palette and often fail to incorporate other colors that are often available but we tend to overlook.

Find your wint-spiration below + enjoy!

Behind The Threads: Road Twenty-Two

Monday, November 02, 2015 4:00:46 PM

We have long been a fan of locally made products, especially clothing. So when we discovered this gem of a company based in San Francisco, that creates perfect fitting tees while carrying out their mission in which the brand was built upon: employing women who have faced challenges in their life, including previously incarcerated women in the Bay Area, we knew had to place an order right away. We especially love Road Twenty Two’s enormous philanthropic effort in creating jobs for women within the brand and love all the super soft fabrics they use that make you feel the need to buy the same tee in five colors (not that that is necessarily a bad thing…).

We spoke more about the line with Road Twenty Two CEO, Fif Ghobadian for this month’s, ‘Behind The Threads’.

fif

1.       What has been your biggest accomplishment with Road Twenty Two?

The biggest accomplishment is when we see customer and store feedback that is equally as passionate about our mission and product as we are. When we see people on the streets wearing our Tees and when we hear people talking about our brand with pure love. Also, it is beyond gratifying to employ amazing women who deserve every opportunity but are unfortunately are black balled by the system.

2.       Besides the fantastic foundation in which the line is built upon, how do your shirts set themselves apart from other t-shirt brands?

Our shirts are created from luxurious US fabrics which have been washed in enzymes for ultra softness.  Road 22 shirts fit to perfection the skim the body, cling in all the right places and fit most body types.  The shirts are casual yet polished, fashionable not trendy and can be take you from day into evening.

3.       How do you see the line evolving within five years?

Our vision is to expand our line beyond Tees for women to all knits, button down shirts and cashmeres. We will continue to expand our men’s line next and then eventually we will have a kid’s line. We are going to be a national brand known for our high quality products and for creating a social movement of giving people a second chance and putting them back into society.

4.       We love that Road Twenty Two is produced entirely in San Francisco. What do you find most special about this aspect within the brand

We are supporting a local community and its wonderful to bring back garment manufacturing to San Francisco. We can just walk over to see our  shirts being produced and we have our pulse on every step of the production.

5.       Do you see the line spanning beyond knit tees and basics in the future?

Yes, we are definitely going to be much more than Knit tees. We will have wovens and a full Men’s and Kid’s line.

Find out more about and shop the line here and check out PlumpJackSport at The Carneros Inn for Road Twenty Two clothing!

NYC Market Essentials

Thursday, September 17, 2015 11:05:12 PM

Ah yes, New York Fashion Week is just wrapping up in NYC. Which means us buyers get to go in next week and have all the fun pick out all the fresh new styles to bring in our stores for Spring.

I love attending market (fashion market: where we go twice a year to pick out the latest and greatest styles for PlumpJackSport at The Carneros Inn) in September vs. February in New York, as it allows for a broader variety of what I can wear. Since we’re on our feet all day long and walking around the city morning and night, I’ve learned how crucial it is to embrace the happy hybrid of fashion and function.

Here’s a glimpse into my go-to market essentials.nyc

1. a versatile carry on/market bag: this bag is nylon, so it’s easy to clean if I spill my wine the kid in front of you spills their juice on the plane due to turbulence, yet roomy and durable, for when we’re lugging around five pounds of orders and looksbooks/linesheets each day. (Tory Burch)

2. comfy, but cute sneakers: sneakers have a come a long way in breaking into the modern fashion world, so it’s almost impossible to not find a cute pair. I especially love these because I’m obsessed with leopard print it’s a great neutral to pair with almost any outfit on my trip. (Sam Edelman)

3. classic shades: an absolute staple – and it’s such a beautiful, sunny time in NYC right now. Protect those eyes in style! (A.J. Morgan)

4. a dark, casual to dressy jean: i live in relaxed/boyfriend-ish style denim, because it’s so easy to take from day to night and you could style with essentially, any shoe. These are comfortable enough to wear all day and flawless to wear at night with a dressy top. (Paige Denim)

5. a big, cozy neutral scarf: this is part of ‘Flying 101′. Steer clear of those shady airplane blankets and opt for a spacious, soft scarf to wrap up when it gets chilly during your flight or throw on when it gets chilly at night if you’re out to dinner. (Calypso)

Behind The Threads: Fidelity Denim

Tuesday, September 08, 2015 3:00:01 PM

Everyone loves a good pair of jeans. And finding that perfect fit and wash is a journey that us ladies will always be on. So when we stumbled upon, Fidelity Denim, a made in California denim line offering an emphasis on the science behind the best fitting jean, we had to bring it in to PlumpJackSport. Lead designer at Fidelity Denim and previous Creative Director at Level 99 jeans, Rokhsan Enanoria spoke with us about the foundation of Fidelity Denim and up and coming styles to have on your fall radar.

0016667

1. Fidelity Denim’s motto is, “Devoted to Denim” – what’s the story behind this? Fidelity’s focus is denim and will always be denim.  It what we are passionate about.  We are constantly asked by customers for other types of clothing/secondary’s to be added to collection.  However, we are devoted to the idea to making beautiful, rich, pure, fitting denim.

2. We all have that one pair of go-to denim that is our tried and true fit, style and wash. What has been become the most versatile style from Fidelity, that the average girl can wear year round? Definitely the Charlie.  This is a fit that is a true skinny.  Just between your ultra skinny and the skinny straight.

3. What sets Fidelity Denim apart from other denim lines out there? Fidelity pledges unwavering devotion to the finest fabrications. Fidelity promises to proudly manufacture every garment in the U.S.A, in a meticulous manner, for the ultimate fit. Fidelity honor’s blue jean history and strives to generate happiness and confidence in all those who create, sell or wear Fidelity.

4. Most people have a skinny, boot cut, cropped and shorts in their current wardrobe. What is a key denim style that we should be on the look for? Flares are an important piece in any wardrobe with the 70’s trend right now. Also, for that forward customer, anti fits and re worked boyfriends are also relevant.

5. What is the best way to care for your denim and get the most life out your favorite pair? Denim is best when it’s  never washed.  The characters of the fabric and it’s weave show through best after aging.

5 Picks for Fall

Friday, August 28, 2015 7:33:05 PM

Fall is upon us and PlumpJackSport has the must have items for this season. These are our picks for the styles that will take you from the office to the bar and everywhere in between.

Every wardrobe’s must-have this season is an army-style cargo jacket or vest. Our favorite picks are the Jack Argi Jacket and the Sanctuary Globe Trekker Vest. Either one of these essentials are sure to complete any autumn outfit.

Layer this over a cream colored cashmere Crewneck Sweater from Velvet to feel luxuriously warm or a plain tee for those warmer fall days.

This seems to be the season of the faux leather pant. When the plain black legging just isn’t enough, dress up any outfit with a pair of Alyssa Leggings from BB Dakota, or, my personal favorite, the Faux Leather Leggings from Spanks.

This whole look can be completed with a pair of Frye booties. We love the Reina bootie in black for a dressier look or the Anna Shortie in cognac for a more classic, everyday look.

Accessorize with a chunky necklace and clutch from Big Buddha to take this look from day to night.

All available at PlumpJackSport in Squaw Valley

Days of Denim

Thursday, August 20, 2015 6:47:15 PM

days of denim

Denim is one of my favorite categories. There’s a wash for every occasion, a fit for everybody type and style for every age.

At the moment, I’m especially loving a good boyfriend jean in a medium worn in wash, like the Fidelity Denim Axl jean and pair with a wedge or heel to balance the relaxed leg. For a cleaner style, I’ve always been a fan of a good J Brand dark rinse skinny and often wear with a flat or sandal. The Indio wash from Hudson offers a lighter wash and cropped fit, so you can pair with a white tee in the fall months and still have a summer vibe.

Right now, we have the whole spectrum of new washes and fits to take you into fall and winter and we cannot wait to pair with cozy sweaters that will be arriving in the coming weeks!

Fall Pieces We Currently Falling For

Even though temps have been hotter than hot here in Napa, they’re not stopping the fall arrivals from coming our way. Which makes us wish we could sport the latest hats and sweaters sooner than later. In the meantime, we can lust over some pieces that we can’t wait to wear full throttle in the next few months.

SUNNIES: if you typically reach for a black or tortoise frame, this olive color is a good way to switch it up + the fit is fantastic.

BLACK PANT: an updated fall staple + the softest fabric ever.

TEE: the color of the year + goes with your fall color palette.

NECKLACE: the necklace you’ll wear all year long + the most dainty piece to pair with everything.

FLOPPY HAT: two words: instant chic + just the right amount of flop.

SWEATER: asymmetrical hem + neutral color, makes for your not so average fall sweater.

The Pant You’ll Reach for Again and Again

Tuesday, April 14, 2015 2:00:33 PM

Have you worn out your tried and true jeans? Already have a pair of summer linen pants? The perfect work to weekend trouser?

Enter: The Jogger Pant – an easy ankle length with a slight banded hem, that you can pair with practically any shoe and with a million fabrics and colors out, this is an ideal pant to take from day to night. I love pairing with heels and a fitted top for drinks at night or with a slip on sneaker and loose sweater during the day. They’re also a great weight to wear throughout spring and well into fall.

A particular jogger pant we’re currently coveting, is the Abby jogger from Level 99. It’s offered in a beautiful chambray inspired dye and the lightweight fabric is as soft as ever.

How we’re styling the Abby jogger for spring: short sleeve white cotton tee shirt +  perforated slip on sneakers.

How To Shop For: Mom

Thursday, November 20, 2014 10:01:48 PM

Not only do I absolutely love shopping for all my friends and family for the holidays, I especially love shopping for my mom. It’s a reason to spoil her and I love the mission of finding just the right gift. The gift that she wouldn’t expect or something she had looked for in the past and had no luck. The gift that simply says, “I love you this much”.

Here are some ideas that she’ll be sure to love.

Necklace – gold plated and age neutral, the perfect piece of elegance for her to wear everyday (Gorjana, $60)

Decorative bowl – so family dinners can be delicious and chic (Tory Burch, $128)

Cozy cape – whether she’s on the go or quiet at home, she’ll be effortlessly in style (Vince, $495)

Double layer gloves – chunky cable knit and fingerless, so she can still text you to say, “Thank you for this fantastic gift!” (Urban Outfitters, $18)

Metallic detail mug – so she can start her day off with some glitz (J Crew, $14.50)

Etched measuring spoons – wood spoons with etched details make these a standout accessory in any kitchen (Urban Outfitters, $20)

Cashmere slippers – because her toes deserve a little luxury too (Arlotta, $115)

Quartz bottle stopper – so the bottle of wine you two just shared can stay fresh (and look pretty) until next time (RABLABS, $64)

Stay tuned for our next post, “How To Shop For: Dad”

Happy Shopping!

Airport Essentials

Thursday, November 06, 2014 11:07:46 PM

The holiday season is upon us! This means shopping for loved ones, the sweet smell of baking, and traveling to see friends and family. So I thought I’d take a moment to share my picks for when you’re at the airport and on the plane, when traveling this holiday season.

I used to not be a fan of flying, but in recent years, I have become more comfortable with it and actually view it as something to look forward to. With each flight, I also become more of an expert flyer, as each trip I learn new tricks to make the traveling experience as seamless as possible. Here are a few pieces to help you find a little more comfort when in the sky in the coming months.

1. Comfortable pants – the ultimate lifesaver. You want a truly comfortable pant to wear on the plane, especially if you’re going to be on a coast to coast flight. These are great since they’re a modal/spandex blend and have fantastic stretch and keep their true black color wash after wash. (Level 99 Lily skinny straight pant in forever black, $118)

2. Comfortable flats – because no one wants to wear bulky shoes while trying to curl up in your seat while watching the latest movie (and taking your shoes off is just not an option). These feel like slippers but wear as a chic flat. Bonus, you can still wear a nylon sock with them for when you have to go through security. (Yosi Samra Samara flat in black crocodile, $70)

3. Notebook – my motto when I’m in the air is, “Life is so much simpler at 30,000 feet”. Thus, the best time to reflect and write down anything that comes to mind. (Kate Spade, “Leave Something to the Imagination” notebook, $24)

4. Hair ties – nothing is worse than when you’re half way through your flight and don’t having something to put your hair up with. I bring a handful of these each trip, just in case. (Goody hair ties, $4)

5. Oversize cozy cardigan – versatility at its’ best. This cardigan is perfect for layering and even better to wrap up in as an alternative to a mysteriously packaged on board blanket. (Tart collections Darla cardigan, $150)

6. Travel proof skin care – for when you feel the effects of the glorious recycled cabin air on board. The line was “created specifically to combat environmental stresses that affect the health of the skin including travel and flight fatigue.” The travel size products offer five ways of hydration to keep you feeling refreshed all flight long and keep you reaching for them even after you land. (Air Repair skincare kit, $42)

Happy and safe travels this holiday season!

Balboa Cafe’s GM, Lisa Leventhal, Shares her Five Faves in the Marina

Tuesday, October 28, 2014 7:32:08 PM

Lisa Leventhal, General Manager at Balboa Cafe San Francisco, will celebrate her one-year anniversary with the restaurant on November 1st. Originally from Florida, Lisa loves San Francisco and all it has to offer. When she isn’t holding court at the Balboa, you can find her stand-up-paddle boarding or hanging out at her favorite spots in the Marina. Here are her five neighborhood faves:

1. Rapha Cycle Club San Francisco  - corner of Fillmore & Fibert

Rapha merges fine cycling wearables, books, and accessories with a neighborhood coffee culture. Cyclists and  locals unite to drink exceptional Four Barrel coffee and nosh on delectable pastries only a cyclist can burn off in a day.  Lisa works long hours on her feet, so strong coffee is a necessity and mingling with the locals makes for a fun break in the day.

2. BodyRok – 2128 Lombard St, San Francisco

Lisa loves BodyRok as a workout because of the versatility it provides, whether you want to cycle, sculpt or even do both in one session. BodyRok Is a fresh approach to fitness, combining core focused strength training and cardio in an upbeat small group environment. The classes pack a lot of punch in just 45 minutes, which is perfect, when you’re working 12+ hours in a day and need to keep up with the energy of a popular neighborhood bar and restaurant that never rests.
3. Causwells – 2346 Chestnut St.

As much as Lisa loves the Balboa Cafe, when she just cannot look at another Balboa Burger, she heads out to her favorite local spot, Causwells. The menu features classic American favorites, as well as European-influenced fare with a seasonal twists. It’s a great place to grab a drink with friends and share plates. Lisa loves the Grilled Octopus with Garbanzos and the housemade ricotta.

  1. Blo –  2167 Union Street

Dry bars are a lifesaver for any working girl who wants to get a fabulous blow out that will last days. Blo is Lisa’s favorite blow dry bar, located just steps from the Balboa on Union St. Drop in before your shift or before a night on the town for a quick and affordable catwalk-quaility blow out. Reservations are recommended.

5. Paper Source – 2061 Chestnut Street

It is nearly impossible to leave Paper Source without purchasing something, whether it’s something you need or something you absolutely don’t need, but HAVE to have. From books to kitschy cards and crafts, Paper Source has it all and then some. Lisa likes the fact that she can run down to grab a quick birthday card for a regular or a staff member on the fly or that spontaneous gift she didn’t know she needed for that person she just met.

So there you have it, Lisa’s Five Fave, but there is more. To find out about her other go-to spots in the neighborhood and beyond, you’ll have to come visit her at the Balboa Cafe. Cheers!

The New Staples: Updated Classics You Need Now

Tuesday, October 28, 2014 6:30:14 PM

Your wardrobe is like your tool box for fashion. You have the crisp white button down, the clean black pant, the classic pea coat, those everyday diamond earrings and those great leather booties – just to name a few essentials. These classics pieces are timeless, because you can wear them season after season and often throughout the year, depending on where you live. They’ve become tried and true styles you can pair with pieces you already own and become your go-to fashions you can always count on for the perfect outfit in a flash.

Fashion is always evolving, and the best part about it evolving, is seeing designers updating the most essential pieces in a way that make us remember why they’re classic, and shines a whole new light on what makes them special. We’ve highlighted a handful of styles with an updated feel to elevate your wardrobe in a new, fresh way.

1. Black pant – the ultimate staple. Opt for this updated version of the black pant for a trouser fit, without the formal feel. (Pictured: J Brand skinny pant)

2. Stud earrings – these long minimal stud earrings are an edgy way to dress up your stud earrings and the hammered look gives them a textured dimension as you move. (Pictured: Gorjana pressed Taner studs)

3. Pop of color dress – not your little black dress, is the perfect go-to dress. The color makes for an outfit all on it’s own. Strategically ruched and the right amount of stretch. (Pictured: DVF Bevin ceramic ruched sheath dress)

4. Booties with detail – a classic black suede bootie with a dressed up heel. Chunky heel for wearability and gold detail when you want to add a pop of lux so you can wear day to night. (Pictured: Tory Burch Regina bootie)

5. Coat – a cozy overcoat feel, with a sweater fit. Drapey cut and contrast piping adds updated details to this classic style coat. (Pictured: Tart Collections Bain coat)

6. White blouse – this flowy shape can be tucked in or out for a dressed up or down look and comfortable enough to wear all day long. Pair with denim for the weekend or your favorite pencil skirt for the work week. (Pictured: Velvet Rosie blouse)

Favorite Fall Staples

Thursday, October 09, 2014 7:10:18 PM

Fall is officially here. Cooler days (for the exception of this weekend here in Napa – 90’s? Really??) are to come and a warmer wardrobe is to be worn. I always love seeing what fun touches designers put on fall staples that will make me feel the need to run out and buy the latest updated peacoat (a hi-lo hem you say?) or new cable knit sweater (what’s that? A new shade of grey?). So as soon as we saw textured sweaters, peplum coats and heavenly cashmere scarves when we bought for fall this past February, we knew we already had chic cold weather essentials to look forward to.

Here are some of our favorite fall staples:

1. Ted Baker Vickiye cape – two words: instant chic.

2. Theodora and Callum scarf – warm color palette for a fun fall print.

3. Ted Baker Bracti peplum coat –  feminine take on the winter coat.

4. Calypso cashmere scarf – the item you’ll reach for all season long.

5. Tory Burch Maxeen sweater coat – a cozy, casual option if you don’t want to fully commit to wearing a coat

6. Skull Cashmere fingerless gloves – when your fingers are cold, but you still have to answer emails on the go.

7. 360 Sweater oversize cowl neck sweater – the epitome of cozy; throw on with skinny denim and boots and you’ve found your fall go-to outfit.

Prevent. Research. Cure.

Thursday, October 02, 2014 10:24:43 PM

Although October has become breast cancer awareness month, we are all well aware 365 days a year, that this cause needs continuous momentum to fund preventive care, research, and to ultimately find a cure. Philanthropy is at the heart of PlumpJack. We’ve stood behind this cause for many years and our annual PlumpJack/LINK golf tournament  that benefits the Cancer Prevention Institute of California, has raised nearly $3 million to date, to help promote strategic preventive efforts. With the help of organizations and our communities, one day will mark an end to an era of research and the beginning of recovery.

We’ve put together our picks for pieces that support breast cancer research.

Giving back never looked so cute

Spring 2015: Here in A New York Minute

A view from the Empire State Building

A view from the Empire State Building

We just got back from New York to buy for spring. While we arrived just after fashion week, style remained in the city and spring trends were the talk of the town. It was in the 70’s and sunny, so the timing was parallel to what’s on trend for spring. Think resort focused prints rich in botanical, fruit, bird and bold floral prints. Designer color palettes included pastels and brights. Denim trends offered small ‘knicks’ vs. distressed details, skinny slouchy fits and cool washed boyfriend cuts. Feminine inspired moto-jackets and printed jogger pants are a just a few fun trends that will also be present in spring and that pair great with classic pieces you already own.

Tory Burch looked fantastic, as always – comprised of raffia tweed, updated gingham prints, color-blocking and fringe details. Earth tones mixed with brights made for a fun spring color palette to appeal to bold and understated styles. Check out her spring runway show for the complete collections of looks, here.

Conversations with Hilary: Zem Joaquin of Ecofabulous

Friday, September 12, 2014 5:23:29 PM

zem-global-green
I am continually impressed with my friend Zem and her entrepreneurial spirit and passion when it comes to the environment. She is a true champion of the eco-lifestyle. She is the Founder of Ecofabulous.com which is a great resource, and she is involved in so many innovative and inspiring organizations, like Global Green USA and the Cradle to Cradle Product Innovation Institute. In this Conversations with Hilary she reveals so much about herself and her passions – enjoy.

What do you believe to be your greatest accomplishment?
My greatest accomplishment is discerning that my kids’ asthma was caused by environmental factors and then eradicating it, which led to my very unplanned career.
IMG_0436
Do you have a prized possession? What?

I love my Tesla. It isn’t the high tech gadgetry or the luxurious interior, it is the immense joy I get zooming past gas stations, knowing I’ll never have to stop at one again.

What do you love about yourself? What do you think others love about you?
I love that I’m led by passion. I think that my friends like my zest for life and my deep loyalty, especially when the cards are down.

If you could be anything other than what you currently are, what would it be?
A doctor.

What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?
I make breakfast and pack lunch for my kids.

What’s your favorite thing to do on a Friday night?
Go over to Gina Pell’s house. Her husband Dave makes us dinner while we compare notes on the week and catch up on projects like her new emoji app LOLy.

What do you like most about what you do for a living/career?
It allows me to work with people I greatly admire and to do everything I love. I deeply enjoy writing but not when I am required to do so. My career allows me to design spaces that are healthy and inspiring, yet I still get to celebrate products and brands I am enamored with. It allows me to travel (sometimes too much) and keeps me on the cutting edge of science. What’s not to love?

What were you passionate about when you were young?
As a kid I was always passionate about nature and animals. Growing up on a commune, I was surrounded by creatures and I felt the need to protect them. As a teenager I was distracted by clubbing but passionate about entrepreneurship, starting my first business while still in high school. I was also always passionate about traveling and getting to know other cultures. In my twenties I traveled all over the world, living in London, Paris and Italy. That is when I became determined to do my part to make the world a better place.

What are you passionate about now?
Protecting the environment.
Excellent design.
Cradle to Cradle thinking.
Iceland.
My daughter’s riding.
My son’s scientific exploration.
Writing and performing raps with my amazing husband.
TED.
Art.
Architecture.
Global Green’s Gorgeous & Green event that I will chair on October 10th for the 10th year!

skvisiWhat’s your favorite season? Why?
Summer. I love being warm and being outside, hiking, diving, rafting, kayaking, riding horses, fishing, drinking Campari and soda with friends on a porch.

If you were a cocktail or drink, what would it be?
I’d probably be an organic tequila and soda. Fun (sometimes too much fun), effervescent, reliable, resilient, well-traveled but light on the planet.

If you were stranded on a desert island, what 3 items would you want to have with you?
Flint, blankets and fishing gear… I’ve never missed a season of Survivor.

If you could be invisible for a day, what would you do?
I’d go hang out behind the scenes of the White House to see what’s really going on.

What’s the #1 most played song on your iPod?
Landslide

If you could have lunch with anyone, living or dead, who would it be?

Dean Kamen and Bill McDonough. Dean is the greatest living inventor (along with Elon Musk) and Bill is the most inspirational environmental designer. Together they can redesign the world beautifully.

If your life was made into a movie, what would it be called?
Ecofabulous, of course.

Do you have any regrets?
I try not to, but I probably would have spent even more time with my beloved grandmothers.

Define Freedom.
Being able to choose what you do for a living, for fun and for the world.

What are your personal core values?
Spread joy, be compassionate and respect all species and the planet. Show up! I live by this Bill McDonough quote: “We need to love all children of all species for all time.”

In The Navy

Thursday, September 04, 2014 7:44:10 PM

Ahh yes, the classic color we ease into after we exhaust our ever evolving black wardrobe. Navy is one of those classic colors that pairs with almost everything and looks good on just about everybody. If you are brave enough to expand your wardrobe color palette, navy is the perfect color to segway from black to a slew of other fun colors. From a classic navy Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress to a navy and white stripe St. James top, it’s a color that is here to stay and one that designers almost always offer in one piece or another, every season.

With some amazing fall collections hitting the racks, I can’t help but notice navy pieces sprinkled in with medium greys, burnt oranges, berry hues and olive greens.

Our favorite navy pieces for fall:

Sara’s Top Five: Falling in Love with Fall Fashion

Monday, August 18, 2014 4:56:41 PM

The beginning of fall in Lake Tahoe is one of the most beautiful times of year.  The traffic has started to slow down, the beaches are less crowded, and the trails are quiet. I love taking my cruiser down the bike path along the West shore, while enjoying the arrival of fall – the aspen leaves are starting to turn yellow and the air is just a little more crisp. Pair the bike ride or hike with a light salad and a glass Sauvignon Blanc on the patio at PlumpJack Café, and I am in heaven.

Here is a list of my closet staples for this fall in Tahoe:

1.)  JBrand Retro Zip Skinny in clean rinse wash

As it gets cooler in Tahoe, a good pair of jeans from JBrand is a must.  I recommend the JBrand Retro Zip Skinny in clean rinse. They don’t stretch out and lose their form, and the dark wash is versatile.

2.)   Jane Strappy Boots in dark brown from Frye ($398)

I absolutely love my Jane Strappy Boots in dark brown paired with my skinny jeans or skirts.  The slight heel on the back dresses up the boot and the dark brown color is easy to pair with my light or dark wash jeans.

3.)   Red 23 Belted cardigan in both white & black

With it getting cooler at night and during the days, I always bring along a lightweight cardigan.  I love Red 23′s belted cardigan in black or white paired with jeans or cutoff shorts.

4.)    Amesha Cotton Twill Vest ($139)

Currently my favorite piece in my wardrobe is my Velvet twill cargo vest in forest – this vest ties all my outfits together.  It looks great over my Tart Collections Romy Top in charcoal.

5.)   Tart Collections Romy Top in charcoal ($88)

(Seen below in striped)

This top is about the most comfortable and stylish top. The fit is perfect and the fabric is soft and cozy.

All of this and more can be found at PlumpJack Sport Squaw Valley.  Our inventory is changing from fashion to ski over the next few months to get ready for a BIG winter here at Squaw Valley, but stop in to shop and save on these fashions, summer clearance & left over winter ski apparel for men, women & kids from 2014 season.

5 Ways Snakeskin is Making it Work for this Fall and Winter

Thursday, August 14, 2014 7:28:19 PM

Trend Alert: The Season of the Snake

1. We like to take a minimalist approach and add the snakeskin as an accent, like a pair of shoes or an oversized clutch. Ugg Alloway Reptile Calf Hair Flats (Retail 120.00)

2. Tone down brighter colors with a nice neutral snakeskin patterned tank or tights.

3. Keep it classic and add a nice snakeskin patterned blouse with a pencil skirt and some basic stilettos. Tart Marina Top (92.00)

4. Add a touch of snakeskin to your ensemble in the form of a chic belt in a bright color.

5. Add an actual snake if you’re going to keep it real on the streets. We don’t recommend buying a snake for this trend, but it sure would make an impressive statement.

All of these styles and more available at our boutique, PlumpJackSport at the edge of the Village at Squaw Valley, right across the street from PlumpJack Squaw Valley Inn.

Men’s Focus: All in The Details

Thursday, June 19, 2014 11:24:00 PM

Men’s fashion has become as relevant and evolved as women’s fashion in recent years. Many men’s designers are updating classic staples by using the softest fabrics and incorporating subtle details. We know guys like soft t-shirts as much as us ladies do, so when designers create soft as ever modal tees and french pants for guys or stitch a cool contrast color thread on their favorite button down, they’ve gotta have it. A few of our favorite designers like Ted Baker, Ben Sherman, Penguin and Vince, have set the tone for quality, comfort and style, that create the perfect balance of fashion and function for guys.

1. Ted Baker  jacket with contrast silk lining

2. Vince cotton/modal/cashmere patch pocket henley sweater

3. Ben Sherman gingham & chambray shirt

4. Vince  french terry sweatpants

Longer and warmer days are finally here, and the first official day of summer is just on the horizon. Transitioning into the summer wardrobe is my particularly favorite time of year  - sandals move to the forefront of your shoe closet, dresses become the perfect go-to outfit, and so begins the justification of how many sunglasses and hats you absolutely “can’t live without”. With every season, we gravitate towards a handful of pieces that we consistently reach for and thus, become our essentials. If you’re from Northern California, visiting the Napa Valley soon or just want to be inspired by Napa Valley’s seasonal fashions, we’ve handpicked our Napa Valley summer essentials so you can take on the season in style.

1. Lightweight cardigan – perfect to layer in cooler mornings and wrap up in when the sun goes down.

How To: Printed Shorts

Thursday, May 22, 2014 8:21:27 PM

Shorts season is officially here! With that said, designers always have fun printed shorts in their seasonal offerings, in addition to classic solids. This can be intimidating to some, as any multicolored bottoms take some strategic thinking when it comes to pairing the right top with them. A good rule of thumb when pairing your top, is this: a neutral color (can almost never go wrong), a color of the same family (think primaries, pastels, neutrals) or one that picks up a color of the print on the bottom.

Below are a few easy ways you can rock printed shorts:

Nautical Inspired Necessities

Monday, January 27, 2014 2:03:07 AM

I’ve always loved classic nautical inspired pieces, as I feel like they’re timeless and chic enough to wear almost year round here in California. It’s always fun to see designers incorporating a nautical feel into their latest collections and I can’t help but feel inspired to wear some of my pieces in new ways. With our lack of winter here in California, I can’t help but be in the summer mindset and sport my new Frye boat shoes on these many sunny days we’ve been having. Below are some of my current favorites that I’ve been sea-ing lately:

NauticalNecessities

1. Splendid striped jacket

2. Frye Quincy boat shoes

3. Tory Burch textured crossbody bag

4. Nordstrom cashmere & silk scarf

5. Saint James for J Crew unisex striped shirt

6. Free People rope belted cuffed shorts

7. Tory Burch chunky stripe straw tote

8. Gorjana anchor necklace

Footwear Favorites: Tory Burch Resort

Sunday, January 19, 2014 8:53:56 PM

A new year, means new shoes, right? Right.

Adding updated staples like a metallic driver, embellished sandal or chunky heel bootie, can refresh your wardrobe in a way that creates new ways to pair your favorite pieces together. Opt for neutrals colors on classic styles (see our picks below), to get the most versatility and thus, combining fashion and function.

Cheers to two thousand foot-teen!
